The human system has been deeply studied by medical people and a vast amount of knowledge has been accumulated. Studying the human system as an electromechanical system and related inter disciplinary research have resulted in development of a new branch in engineering technology - the Biomedical Engineering. Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and techniques to the medical field. This branch incorporates study of the engineering aspects of human body as well as the study of sophisticated equipments used by the modern medical science. The discipline of biomedical engineering is the integrating medium for the two great dynamic professions; Medicine and Engineering. It combines the design and problem solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to help improve patient healthcare and quality of life of individuals.

Clinical engineering is a subset of Biomedical engineering. It is a branch of biomedical engineering related to the operation of medical equipment in a hospital setting. Whereas, biomedical engineering is practiced primarily in academic institutions, research laboratories and manufacturing set ups clinical engineering is practiced in hospitals and other environments where medical device technologies are actually utilized. Clinical engineers work closely with clinicians, surgeons and other staff who are in direct patient care services. They support and advance patient care services by applying engineering and management skills to healthcare technology. Today they act as the driving forces of cost control, utilization, optimization, regulatory requirements, patient safety and human error awareness and increasing complexity of technical environment.

A full-fledged engineering division is functioning in hospital complex from the very inception of the Institute. This set up was foreseeing the importance of engineering technology in medicine. Setting up an engineering division for supporting the healthcare activities, along with other mainstream disciplines is not very common in India. Now, adopting the SCTIMST as model, most the advanced healthcare institutions in the public as well as private sector have started setting up engineering departments in their hospitals for looking after their costly biomedical equipments.

Administration of medical equipment management is the prime responsibility of Clinical Engineering Division in SCTIMST. The Division of Clinical Engineering provides guidance and direction in the selection of medical equipments. It works with other departments to ensure proper working of equipments through out the expected life, inventory, and proper information on equipments.

Maintenance of Electrical substation, distribution of electrical power, maintenance of various biomedical equipments whole their life cycle from preparation of specification till its condemnation after several years, attending breakdowns immediately for vital equipments in critical areas like operation theatres, ICUs, imaging modalities, maintenance of water supply, air conditioning systems, lifts and elevators, communication systems, hospital medical gas supplies, etc are some of the responsibilities of the biomedical engineering division.

Headed by one Engineer - G, another four engineers, One Junior Engineer (Electrical) Ten Technical Assistant (Electrical, Electronics, Communication and AC), One Tele Communication Assistant, Eight Ref.& A/C Mechanic cum Plant Operators, Three Lift Operators, Seven Electrician cum Lift Operators, One Fitter, One Plumber, One Audio Visual Assistant, Four Graduate Apprentice Trainees, Four Diploma trainees, Thirteen ITI trainees, One Unit helper and three Last grade staffs constitute the department.
